So Franky House found another translator to start doing Rosario to Vampire. First nobody wants to work on it for weeks and then as soon as I give the translations to Binktopia instead they've got people jumping at it. Well now I have to decide whether I want to keep on translating it and try and compete with this new guy, try and convince Franky House that they should take my translations along with letting me give them to binktopia, or just give up Rosario to Vamprie altogether. I really don't want to give it up since it was my favourite series as well as being the one with the highest number of people discussing it meaning that I can't have conversations with them about it (Defense Devil doesn't have many people discussing it). I don't want to translate it if this other guy is going to do it. The worst part is he is probably only doing it at their request, while I actually enjoy reading it.

I'm really regretting getting involved in groups. Ju-da-su has the right idea making every single one of your translations public. As soon as you put that line 'reserved for' at the top of your translation all you are asking for is trouble. I should just go back to making all of my translations public, except that then the two groups I am currently with will get all uppity about it. What is with people and insisting that you 'don't betray your team mates'. Gaaah. Now it makes me look like a bad guy whenever something like this happens. Well thats it. Starting from when I go up to university again I'm just going to try and get heaps of translations done. That way I'll be able to say hey at least I do heaps of translation, far more than I do for groups.

We're going to be driving to a place a few hours away and picking up a brand new member of the family on Saturday. We're going to call her Belle, and she's a little 3 month or so old Border Collie puppy, our first dog. So far we've been a a family with cats, but my mother got all into the idea of getting a puppy and one of her patients breeds border collies. Only problem was that the puppy who my parents were thinking of adopting was such a good quality puppy that the owner wants to keep her to become a show dog. Poor thing. So instead he gave my mother the contact details of another border collie breeder who lives some place about 2 hours away near Sydney. They had a female puppy only a few weeks old there and they went up and looked at her. Apparently she is really gentle which is good, because we still have three cats who are going to have to live with it...
I'll post up some photos of her once we get her. The interesting thing is that a week and a half after we get her my other family members are going to be going to New Zealand for a holiday for a week, so it will just be me and her and the three cats alone at home. Bonding time!

So my parents went down to Thredbo today for some skiing which meant I finally got access to the computer that has the scanner on it so I can scan in another chapter of the 4 Kuzumoto kids. Started melting the glue at 1.10pm, after holding the spine for a couple of minutes I had a marvellous idea. Why not just lay the book down next to the hair dryer and go away for a couple of minutes. A few minutes later and the pages come off the spine much easier than when I did the first chapter. Started scanning in all 52 pages at 1.20, finished scanning them in at about 3pm (a bit over an hour and a half), took the files to my computer down stairs and cropped and resized them in about 30 minutes. So I was able to get the whole chapter scanned in and ready to upload in just over 2 hours, while the first time I did it it took about 4 hours (since I didn't get the glue to melt as thoroughly and tried cropping it on the computer upstairs where it is harder to crop it upon).
Yay!

I was going through a walkthrough in preparation of starting Pokemon Platinum and came across a section that reminded me of something that occured in one of my Emerald games. It's said that acquiring the pokerus is an extremely rare event, even rarer than seeing a shiny pokemon. Well I haven't seen a single shiny pokemon in any of the games I've played (GS,RSE,FRLG) but I have acquired the pokerus - on the Rayquaza I caught on my first run through of Emerald.
Apparently the chances of acquiring the pokerus are 1 in 32,768. And for it to have been on the title legendary pokemon of the game...well I'm pretty sure the chances of that happening are even lower.

One down today and one more to go next Friday. It's been a year and a half since I had my last exam, funny feeling going back into that exam hall. 3 short answer questions of one page each and then two longer questions of three pages each. But each one page question was worth six marks while the three page questions were worth 12 marks. So i was going to spend 40 minutes on each three page lot but ended up spending an hour on the first three and then only wrote 2 and a half pages and 2 pages for the other ones. I blame my hand getting sore since it hasn't written so much for such a long time. Overall should be a passing mark however.
Also I made an impulse buy and got Pokemon Platinum at a games store in Sydney last week. Now I just need to buy a Nintendo DS Lite (since it's cheaper than the original).

Here is chapter number 2 of Gamaran, of which Ju-da-su has done chapter 1.
( Gamaran Chapter 2 )
If Ju-da-su wants to translation check it for accuracy before I post it on Mangahelpers I would be very appreciative as there were a couple of lines where I was a little unsure of the meaning ><

So I posted the interview with the guy from the wild fang project last night and it already has almost 40 posts (12 hours after posting it). There haven't been that many posts in an interview since the first two or three. Most of the comments are about how they are ripping off both readers and the manga author over their practice of getting people to 'pay for sponsorship' of a volume when everyone else is doing it for free. While we technically are breaking copyright by scanning and translating a manga series (well I don't think translating one is breaking copyright, after all you are just translating one language into another, it's the actual hosting and downloading of the pictures that is real deal), it isn't hurting the creator or benefitting off their work (apart from the fact that we are getting the raw for free - except for the raw provider who does pay). In fact I don't think any of the manga series I am currently translating would ever be licensed in Australia, so apart from ordering in volumes from Japan to read myself there isn't any other way to get them. And that means that everyone who can't read Japanese wouldn't be able to enjoy them either. Plus an average volume of manga costs about $16 at the bookshop here, what a rip off.
But anyway, as for giving the interview the guy actually asked for one about two months ago and since I don't want to refuse any one who asks I eventually gave him one. Although I didn't know what that group did at the time, but once the response arrived I couldn't go back and say 'sorry I'm not posting this interview that you wrote out'... . I was going to proofread through it and fix up all the badly written stuff but it was so long and would have taken too much time so I just figured 'I'll just chuck it up and let people see how bad it is for themselves'. Probably a bit slack on my part but if everyone else is going to go to the trouble of making sure that their responses are already well written then why should he get away with not doing so. I don't want to make a comment in the interview comments themselves about my thoughts about having people pay when they shouldn't since I try to be nice to everyone I can on Mangahelpers...although now I'm talking about someone behind their back -_-...don't tell anyone.
Oh well, coming up I'm hoping to have one with a new translator called Dark-san who actually translates from Chinese to english, then Viccissitude of Ju-Ni (who is a bit more upstanding I think and should help people to forget about this current controversial one) then probably with Bomber D Rufi who I saw made a comment about wanting to be interviewed in one of his translations. I also want to give him one since I really love Gintama but couldn't think of trying to translate all that text every week, scary.

( Bleach 358 translation )
And here is Bleach chapter 358, probably one of the shortest scripts I have ever done. It's just a random release since I don't think I'll continue doing it (everyone will just use cnet's translation anyway). Still it is funny that I was able to beat cnet to translating it.
One thing I find really weird about series like naruto and bleach...all the 'person a vs person b' discussions, and complaints and comparisions of power. It's a lonely job translating new series.

Chapter 6 of Defense Devil is done. I got this one out of the way because it's for a speed scan. The good thing about doing lots of monthlies is that these 20 page a chapter series seem so short.
( Translation of chapter 6 )
A few thoughts on the series so far,
It's not quite your standard shounen action series, but it isn't really a mystery either. It seems that Youn and Wan are able to come up with unique ideas for their manga, although they are usually pretty heavily based around real world mytholgies or legends. Shin Angyo Onshi used a lot of Korean and Chinese stuff, while Defense Devil and Let's Bible draw more heavily upon Christian beliefs. Kucabara is as likeable a main character as I've come across. He's really weak when he doesn't have access to his spinach, but once he eats it he easily outclasses his opponents, which means that he needs to solve the supposed crime before the person is chucked into hell, all the while as the shinigami keeps on taking the soul. From here on I think we will probably have another 5 or 6 chapters where he solves another case like the last two before we start getting into a bit more of an over arching theme. Although the end of the chapter did mention an unexpected client, which could meant hat we are already getting into the meat of the storyline already. I guess we'll know more next week. As for where the story might go it looks like Kucabara will eventually be set up against either the shinigami or the demons of the devil world (if they are in fact a seperate thing, I'm still not too sure yet).
I'll also just use this to note a couple of translation things. I'm currently translating the name for the souls as Unknown Souls, rather than just Unknown (whcih is what the katakana reads). This is because the meaning for the kanji is basically soul, while the furigana is different. However in english Unknown wouldn't readily be recognised as meaning soul, so I did it that way to reduce confusion. I'm also translating Bichula's name with an l rather than an r becasue based on the way you say his name it has a slightly more l tint to it than an r tint. The oo sound in ula leaves your tongue in a palatal position making it very natural to leave it where it is in order to make the rolling l sound. However to make a rolling r sound would require you to pull your tongue back and open your mouth, which just isn't natural when you already have the tongue set out to make another sound.
Final thing is why don't scanlators put translator notes in releases anymore? Often there's really important stuff there that can only be explained if you put it in a note, and when it doesn't get put in it goes over everyone else's head.

Wooh! I hate people who do that, although you usually only find them on youtube or GameFAQs.
So I finally got a live journal after having disdained journals since I was young. I never saw the need to write out 'dear journal today I went to school and studied'. But now I have some things to write about so I guess I can write one. Thanks to Ju-da-su for being the catalyst since I needed to register to comment on one of her articles.
I'm just starting to get into a stressed mode after having been in lay-about mode for the past three months. I have 2500 page assignment due on th 25th and I only have about 800 words done now. I still have a week left but with my procrastination I'll still probably do most of the work on the final day. At least this way I'll have some of it done, I've definitely matured now to the point that I'm starting my assignments more than a day before they are due. But after that is done then I'll have to get started on my second chinese assignment, which is due on the 6th. All I have to say is thank god I'm only doing two units this semester.
I'm going to start work on Akatsuki chapter 4 now, which is actually from last month since Ju-da-su doesn't have easy access to the internet. I can only feel for her though, when I was without internet for the first four days of my time in China I couldn't do anything except lie on my bed and play pokemon (although it was winter at the time so I didn't want to go outside).
